Race 15: NYYC American Magic (Port entry) vs Team New Zealand (Starboard entry)

The fourth day of the Louis Vuitton Round Robin Challenger Series brought a thrilling match between NYYC American Magic and Team New Zealand. The race was a nail-biter from start to finish, showcasing both teams' highest level of tactical skill and boat handling.

American Magic entered the start box on port, with Emirates Team New Zealand on starboard. Both teams executed a split tack, setting the stage for a closely fought battle. American Magic displayed their speed advantage early on, taking the lead on the first upwind leg and rounding the upwind gate with a narrow 10-second lead.

The race remained incredibly tight, with American Magic maintaining a slim lead through the first downwind leg. By the third leg, Emirates Team New Zealand began closing the gap, reducing the delta to just 5 seconds. The tension was palpable as the boats traded places and battled for every inch on the course.

On the fourth leg, Emirates Team New Zealand executed a precise maneuver, taking the lead as they rounded the mark, just seconds ahead of American Magic. The race continued to be a game of chess on the water, with each team pushing the other to the limit.

As the teams approached the final upwind mark, New Zealand extended their lead to 16 seconds. An unfortunate error by American Magic as they rounded the final mark cost them valuable time, effectively ending their challenge for the win. Emirates Team New Zealand crossed the finish line 29 seconds ahead, claiming victory in a race that will be remembered as one of the closest and most exciting of the round robin series.

Although no points were at stake in this race, the intense competition gave American Magic valuable insights. Paul Goodison, reflecting on the race, commented, “Good start and tremendous work by the cyclors. We’ll sharpen a few things up and come back stronger, continuing to progress and improve.”

American Magic will take the lessons learned from this match into the remaining Round Robin races, determined to build on their performance and challenge for the top spot in the Louis Vuitton Cup.
